Smart People, Bad Grammar
Smart People, Bad Grammar Smart People, Bad Grammar Smart People, Bad Grammar By Daniel Scocco Stanley Bing, a novelist and columnist for Fortune magazine, recently published an enlightening ââ¬â let alone hilarious ââ¬â piece on his blog. Titled ââ¬Å"When Smart People Use Bad Grammar,â⬠the article describes the common confusion around the usage of the personal pronouns ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠and ââ¬Å"me.â⬠Iââ¬â¢m sitting at a lounge last week in Los Angeles with a top business reporter. True, weââ¬â¢re drinking, but that doesnââ¬â¢t really explain what happens next. Iââ¬â¢m conversing with him about something that doesnââ¬â¢t really concern you, and things get kind of confidential, and I ask for his promise that the matter will remain off the record. â⬠Donââ¬â¢t worry,â⬠says the reporter, a graduate of a fine college and probably a reputable journalism school. ââ¬Å"That will just be between you and I.â⬠And here is his explanation on the proper usage: For the record, and for those who even marginally care: this is really easy. The word ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠is used when the You in questions is the subject of a sentence. ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠does things. ââ¬Å"I like that,â⬠you say. You donââ¬â¢t say, ââ¬Å"Me like that,â⬠unless you are Tarzan. ââ¬Å"Meâ⬠makes his appearance when things are done to You. ââ¬Å"He really screwed me on that deal,â⬠is both a common occurrence and correct usage. If you want to read more about this topic, we covered the issue on the article ââ¬Å"Me, Myself, and I.â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? The research in the second journal however is about Academic dishonesty and perceptions of Pakistani students. The critical review in the second journal criticized about the Methodological issue and theoretical issue which involve Sample of the study, research instrument and procedure of study. Journal 1 Cheating behavior among undergraduate students Batool, Saeeda; Abbas, Anam; Naeemi, Zahra. International Journal of Business and Social Science, ISSN 2219-1933, 01/2011, Volume 2, Issue 3, p. 246 Summary This research paper has taken into considerat ion the factors that persuade students at the undergraduate level to cheat. The basic purpose of this research paper is to analyze the reasons that persuade students to cheat at the undergraduate level. In this paper, the factors taken in to account are student CGPA, parental pressure, lack of preparation for a particular exam, studentââ¬â¢s time consumed in extracurricular activities and gender on the level of cheating done by students. Specifically, for this paper the term ââ¬Ëcheatingââ¬â¢ means the following; cheating on quizzes, exams and assignments. For research and data collection purposes, the total sample size taken is 300 undergraduate students from five different universities. With the data that was collected, analysis was done through cross-tabulation and other tools for defining the relationship between the dependent and independent variables. Lastly, this paper also talks about the relationship between the factors that cause undergraduate to cheat. Journal 1 Critical Review Methodological Issue Sample of the Study A total of 300 undergraduate students were involved in this research. 60 undergraduate students were selected from five different universities and colleges. The universities and colleges that were involved were NUST Business School, Bahria University, FAST, Islamic International University and Shifa Medical College which are all situated in Islamabad. Even though the sample size of each institution was equal, the data from this research cannot be generalized worldwide due to the small sample of this research and the race of the sample. Even though the sample size of the study was equal, but it is unknown that whether the male ratio and female ration are equal in each sample size. Moreover, the data that were collected were all from the undergraduates in Islamabad, which composed of mostly Middle Eastern students. In addition, the institutions were not chosen at random, due to the institutions were chosen based on the authorsâ â¬â¢ ability to conduct the study. Thus, it will be inappropriate to use the title of this research which is ââ¬Å"cheating behaviors among undergraduate studentsâ⬠due to the data cannot be generalized. Aside from, that it is unknown that whether the participants were selected randomly or the participants voluntarily participate the research. But, in this case, the researcher most probably adapted the method of convenient sampling. Even though, convenient sampling allows researcher to collect data easily, but it also has the element of selection bias which might affect the results of the research.

World War III. Introducing C. Wright Mills and Goertzel Article Essay
World War III. Introducing C. Wright Mills and Goertzel Article - Essay Example Mills's collection market paper- back, The Causes of World War III, sold more than one hundred thousand copies to the civilians who were anguished by the Sputnik after they comprehended that the United States did not contribute to the campaign against the altering of the nuclear attack (Mills 32). In the book ââ¬Å"The Causes of World War IIIâ⬠, it is noted that there was a ââ¬Å"relentless thrust of assertion and a bludgeoning style, none of which affected the complexity of argument or the credibility of evidenceâ⬠. According to Mills it was much easier for the Soviet Union to substitute the impassioned description for a thorough analysis. In spite of these weaknesses, Mills tries to view and compare the elites of United States and the Soviet Union in the year 1950. This is aimed at drifting and thrusting a force towards the war that was alleged to have affected the nations. In the year 1958, Mills describes that it was not evident that United States was ever going to en d the war with the North Vietnam or the Soviet Union. This was anticipated to the post World War II domination of the world strategies that were imposed by Americans and the Soviet Union and it was due to turn down. ... The explosion of the New Left movements in the 1960s is not only attributed to his art work alone, but they undoubtedly contributed to it. Mills' policies were not based on the prediction of the future, but the change that was to be inculcated. The New Left was often disparaged for not abiding by the policies that composed of positive proposals for change. Mills evaded the problem and through his pacifist manifesto of 1958, the radical, utopian demands, such as unilateral nuclear disarmament were combined with the practical modification that could easily be accepted by liberals. This included the recognition of Red China, the increment of foreign aid, and the enhancement of student interactions with the Soviet Union. Majority of the liberal reforms, were implemented making the book to yield not only in the promotion of specific policy proposals, but in shaping the zeitgeist of 10s prejudice. The potency and shortcomings of the New Left are projected in Millsââ¬â¢ polemical writing s (Mills 54). Facts Goertzel Uses Against Mills Analysis According to Mills analysis, there has been an introduction of the power elite in the 1960s. These are termed as the definitive assumptions, terminologies and research techniques. The objective approach of the examining groupââ¬â¢s success is directed by the economic resources. The main principle of the sanction of power is the ability to maintain a balanced national income. The industrial complex is increasingly dominating the American nation. Market Research Implementation Plan Essay -- Market Research
Market Research Implementation Plan Disney resorts currently exist in numerous locations across the world. Disney must utilize marketing research to make this determination, and the following discusses the four types of research methods Disney might use. Determining the research tools is an important step for the company because they are the ones that will be used to collect and analyze the data to determine the needs of the market. The objective is to examine the applicability of four different research tools such as surveys, questionnaires, focus groups and in depth interviews. The analysis will allow Disney to determine the most applicable research tool to obtain data used to make important decisions. There is also a compare and contrast section discussing pros and cons of each tool, as well as an analysis of which tool would be most effective to Dis ney. Finally, there is a definition of secondary market research as well as a description of how Disney will use secondary market research to determine how the resort would fair in such a location. Types of Research Methods Disney will use the several primary research methods to determine whether a new Disney resort would do well in Rio de Janeiro. The first research method will be the use of surveys. These surveys will be two-fold, as Disney needs to find out about current Disney visitors as well as locals in Rio de Janeiro. The surveys can help Disney get an idea of how receptive these two groups are to having a new Disney location. Questionnaires will allow Disney to determine not only how customers feel about... ...sney can use secondary market research to complete the research process. Defining secondary market research shows how such research can effectively supplement primary market research. Disney will use secondary research such as a census of languages in Rio de Janeiro, to help verify whether Disney can benefit the local economy of Rio as well as a study of popular languages in the area, to determine if bilingual staff is necessary. The selected tools will help Disney Brazil become another successful Disney resort. Works Cited Burns, A. C., Bush, R. F. (2006). Marketing research: Online research applications (5th ed.). Terms Every Aspiring Journalist Needs to Learn
Journalism, like any profession, has its own set of terms, its own lingo, that any working reporter must know in order to understand what people are talking about in a newsroom and to help produce a great news story. Here then are 10 terms that you should know. Lede The lede is the first sentence of a hard-news story; a succinct summary of the storyââ¬â¢s main point. Ledes should typically be a single sentence or no more than 35 to 40 words. The best ledes are ones that highlight the most important, newsworthy and interesting aspects of a news story while leaving out secondary details that can be included later in the story.ââ¬â¹ Inverted Pyramid The inverted pyramid is the model used to describe how a news story is structured. It means the heaviest or most important news goes at the top of the story, and the lightest, or least important, goes at the bottom. As you move from the top to the bottom of the story, the information presented should gradually become less important. That way, if an editor needs to cut the story to make it fit a particular space, she can cut from the bottom without losing any vital information. Copy Copy simply refers to the content of a news article. Think of it as another word for content. So when we refer to a copy editor, were talking about someone who edits news stories. Beat A beat is a particular area or topic that a reporter covers. On a typical local newspaper, youll have an array of reporters who cover such beats as the police, courts, city hall and school board. At larger papers, beats can become even more specialized. Papers like The New York Times have reporters who cover national security, the Supreme Court, high-tech industries and health care. Byline The byline is the name of the reporter who writes a news story. Bylines are usually placed at the beginning of an article. Dateline The dateline is the city from which a news story originates. This is usually placed at the start of the article, right after the byline. If a story has both a dateline and a byline, that generally indicates that the reporter who wrote the article was actually in the city named in the dateline. But if a reporter is in, say, New York, and is writing about an event in Chicago, he must choose between having a byline but no dateline, or vice versa.à Source A source is anyone you interview for a news story. In most cases, sources are on-the-record, which means they are fully identified, by name and position, in the article for which they have been interviewed. Anonymous source This is a source who does not want to be identified in a news story. Editors generally frown upon using anonymous sources because they are less credible than on-the-record sources, but sometimes anonymous sources are necessary. Attribution Attribution means telling readers where the information in a news story comes from. This is important because reporters dont always have firsthand access to all the information needed for a story; they must rely on sources, such as police, prosecutors or other officials for information. AP Style This refers to Associated Press Style, which is the standardized format and usage for writing news copy. AP Style is followed by most U.S. newspapers and websites. You can learn AP Style for the AP Stylebook.
